What to watch on TV tonight: New Year's Day
DailyEdge.ie rounds up the TV shows that you’ll be tweeting about tonight and talking about tomorrow.
Firstly, here are the movie highlights:
Maleficent (BBC One, 5pm)
The story of a very happy and pure young woman named Maleficent who grows up in an idyllic forest kingdom. One day, an army threatens to invade the land (we can relate), so this young woman is left with no choice but to become the kingdom’s fiercest protector. Unfortunately, she is betrayed and becomes very bitter and obsessed with revenge.
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 (RTÉ 2, 3.45pm)
Christmas is really winding down, now that the last Harry Potter film is airing on RTÉ. This is your last chance to cosy up and watch the films, unless of course, you have the time for a duvet day and marathon later in the week. Time’s running out for Harry and he finally has to face Lord Voldemort in a battle that concludes the series.
Paddington (Film4, 2.35pm)
Something soothing for the sore heads this afternoon. A young Peruvian bear travels to London in search of a home, only to find himself lost and alone at Paddington Station, where he’s offered some temporary accommodation from the very kind Brown family. Everything’s going well until a horrible taxidermist sees him and hatches a sinister plan.
Titanic (E4, 7pm)
If you have 3 hours and 15 mins free tonight, here’s some plans for the evening. James Cameron’s Titanic is as comforting as it is depressing. It recounts the events of the sinking of the ill-fated Belfast ship, which resulted in the death of over 1,500 people in 1912.
Notting Hill (TV3, 9pm)
British rom com about a London bookshop owner played by Hugh Grant, who is thrown into romantic turmoil when a famous American actress (played by Julia Roberts) comes to town and appears in his shop. It turns into a full-blown affair as the average Englishman and the Hollywood movie star attempt to reconcile their different lifestyles.
The best of telly tonight:
McMafia (BBC One, 9pm)
A brand new series following an English-raised son of Russian exiles. Alex Godman wants to escape his family’s criminal past and build his own legitimate business and life with with his girlfriend Rebecca, but things just aren’t that simple. His past haunts him and he has to confront his values to protect his loved ones. Based on the bestselling book by Misha Glenny.
BBC BBC
Grandpa’s Great Escape (BBC One, 6.55pm)
David Walliams’ children’s book is brought to TV tonight, telling the story of a boy called Jack’s grandfather who has Alzheimer’s disease. Jack’s family can no longer look after his grandfather, so he’s sent off to Twilight Towers care home, which is being run by a woman called Miss Dandy who has some bad intentions. Jack helps his grandfather make a daring escape.
The Great Festive Bake Off (Channel 4, 7.40pm)
